Caves Beach, on the stunning Lake Macquarie coastline of New South Wales, is one of those rare places that feels both laid‑back and special. Famous for its sea caves, golden sand and friendly village vibe, it’s a favourite with families, surfers and relaxed holiday‑makers looking for an easy coastal escape.
Only 90 minutes north of Sydney and tunnels and freeways, make the trip smooth and easy. And Caves Beach is perfectly located to explore the Lake Mac region. Lots of lovely little towns and beaches to discover and Newcastle is about 20 minutes north with all you need from a large regional city.
Great shopping can be had at Charlestown (15 minutes away) or Kotara (also about 15 minutes away). Cinemas, ten pin blowing and loads of fantastic restaurants to try, the area is rich in options!
Don't forget to visit historic Catherine Hill Bay, Redhead Beach and Pelican's reserve!
Explore the Famous Sea Caves
The natural sea caves at Caves Beach are the star attraction. Best explored at low tide, these dramatic rock formations are perfect for gentle adventure, photography and curious kids. Always check tide times before heading down and wear sturdy shoes, as rocks can be slippery.
Once in the caves, look to the tunnel to the left which leads to a secret beach with lots of gorgeous rock pools - perfect for kids to explore!
Swim, Surf or Stroll
Caves Beach is patrolled during peak seasons and offers great conditions for swimming and beginner‑friendly surfing. If you’re not in the water, the long stretch of sand is ideal for beach walks, sandcastles or a quiet moment with a coffee.
Eat & Drink Locally
One of the joys of Caves Beach is that you can walk almost everywhere. Cafes, casual dining and the iconic Caves Coastal Bar & Bungalows are all nearby, making it easy to enjoy long lunches or sunset drinks without hopping in the car.
Boffee or Mawsons have great coffee and are minutes walk away. There are two grocery shops also in walking distance and the IGA includes a well stocked bottle shop. A pharmacy, a fish-n-chip shop and even a gelateria are all only moments stroll away. You could actually stay with us at Beached@Caves and NOT use your car the whole time. How blissful and liberating is that!!
The Caves Beach surf club which is a 15 minute stroll along the beach has a great cafe and bar and on Sunday nights throughout summer have live music. The Caves Coastal Bar also has live music on weekends and indoor or outdoor dining tables to make the most of the spectacular view!
And Swansea, which is only a 9 minute drive away has more take away restaurants, Coles, Woolies, Dan Murphy's and more!
Perfect for Families and Groups
With calm mornings, space to roam and plenty of nearby activities, Caves Beach is especially well‑suited to family holidays and group getaways. Staying locally means you can truly slow down and enjoy the rhythm of coastal life and Beached@Caves is literally a 3-4 minute stroll through the resort and across a park straight onto the sand!
Beached@Caves is located in an estate with private roads and no thoroughfares, so you'll see lots of kids playing on the streets: cricket, basketball and of course bike riding, scooters and skateboards. It's very much a safe and chilled space for families to stroll around and enjoy.
